What is a Good Muslim?
We naive Westerners cling to the belief that there are “good muslims” out there. We like to think that good muslims are the non-terrorists — our neighbors, muslims we see in the grocery store, at work, at school, and those on TV that cry foul and condem the actions of a ”few.” We tend to equivocate Muslim values to Western/Christian values. But what is good for a Western Christian or even a Western Athiest is not necessarily what is good for a Muslim.
Is a good muslim a muslim that goes to mosque every Friday? Is it one that prays and fasts regularly?
Is it one that “tolerates” other’s beliefs (when/if necessary) – with or without charging them a jizya tax?
Is it one that follows Muhammad’s example, spreading Islam by any means necessary?
Islam is comprised of the muslim community known as the ”ummah”, and it is obligatory on the ummah to wage jihad on the non-muslims until they submit. Not everyone in the ummah is required to fight a bloody fight. In fact, they must not fight if fighting is not necessary to spread Islam. When it is easier to force or coerce non-muslims to Islam by soft means -i.e. politics, the education system, Shariah finance, acceptance of Shariah Law, intimidation, deceit (taqiyyah), ridicule, and imposed guilt — then soft means are the required means. Only when soft means are insufficient is terror acceptable, and ultimately required. Islamic doctrine holds that the world ultimately and rightfully belongs to Muslims, so all methods are happening simultaneously in different locations and environments, with the method dependent on the unique circumstances for each place.
There must always be an ummah to return to. There must always be a ummah generating Muslims to support the ongoing , mandatory, and primary jihad– to spread Islam. Members of the ummah are required to do whatever is necessary to help with the primary jihad, however insignificant it may seem. Having babies helps the jihad by producing more ummah. Infiltrating other societies, their education and their political systems, helps the jihad as well. Muslim communities that do not mix in with host nations are involved in jihad. Muslims who do mix in but demand special priveleges are also acting on their own version of jihad. Jihad does not mean that a Muslim must be actively involved in violent jihad.
The claim that there is a lesser jihad and a greater jihad comes from Muhammed, who said he had just come from the “lesser” jihad after coming from battle. This does not necessarily mean it is lesser in importance — It could mean that it is merely lesser on the conscience because a “good” muslim supports the ummah, upon which jihad against non-muslims is obligatory. As Muhammad said to his follower, Umayr, who stabbed the Medina poetess and her baby while sleeping–for speaking out against Muhammed, “two goats would barely butt their heads together over her.”
